The Devil’s Arsonist by William Gilderiche: A Reincarnation Murder Mystery

“There is an ancient house in the village in which I live, of which it is said by the more superstitious among us, that its first owner, then Bishop of London, used up all the luck in the world. So much so that all who have ever lived within its walls, have suffered grave misfortune; it bringing upon them everything that is bad: financial ruin, murderous assaults, ghostly apparitions, family tragedy and death. It was in this very house that I first plied my trade; and whose soul I searched; finding that only evil dwelled therein. It is a place, where the Devil’s Arsonist did once knock.”

For, I am a man like no other; for I alone can read souls; not those of people but of buildings. This is the story of my past lives; relived through the terrifying visions that keep me awake at night and trouble my thoughts by day. You will read of my past incarnations and my quest to save my soul from the flames of redemption. For I on the orders of Satan himself did kill by fire across the ages. My name is William Gilderiche and I am the Devil’s Arsonist.

This is my story. It is a tale of good and evil; of damnation and redemption; of war and peace, of murder and death; of truth and lies; of loyalty and betrayal; of trust and deceit; and of love and grief. All of this and more. For I did find a centuries old parchment, which contained a riddle within a tale, one that told of a brave monkey who cried and died by the very devil’s flames.

In its four verses which did speak to me, each written in a hand and tongue now forgot by all but few, of which I be one. It told of an ancient evil that still lives and walks this land for two millennia now past.

First Verse

The monkey cried and dyed by a mother’s hand. This Barbary ape of my Father’s from Portugal was. For I escaped from the fire. Quarterly and Impaled into the holy Arms of a Wise man. I who bore his name. The purpose of its Visitation was to tell. Near its badge that I did find then hid. Answers he my heir shall learn still there.

Second Verse

That tell of an ancient pagan Goddess of a Queen. One of war and fire three times victory was had. A fourth denied by Roman Hand. In return her Master’s familiar did kill by flame. That once dwelt within the soul of the first borne of her my kin.

Third Verse

Was then by bell, book and candle. Cast out by him from the bosom. Of our Holy Mother Church here, in Heaven and on earth. By he here in God’s name rule in Old English. After the Conqueror of the same name did come.

Fourth Verse

But this evil did still live defying death. In innocent disguise and with deceit they hid across the ages. For they are the Devil’s Imp of fire. He here did prophecy that now hid. That you my heir to come. Who they fear. May yet destroy them. When the Flames of Redemption. Are upon their wicked soul.
